Listen, wine and International Women’s Day were meant to be celebrated together. Have a little look at the shade of purple nominated as the official colour of the day and tell us that it’s not the spitting image of a glass of organic pinot noir catching a flash of the midday sun.
Now that the link between the two has been indisputably proved (we’re only half joking) it’s time to discuss how you can make sure you’re celebrating two incredibly important things: wine and the vital role women play in this world.
Learn more about women in wine
This is perhaps the most obvious way you can both appreciate and deepen your knowledge of both subjects. There is an army of passionate, talented, and determined women trying to make a difference to Australian wine. There’s no better place to start than our February blog, which contains an interview with three of our favourite female Australian winemakers.
Once you’ve become acquainted with the stars we covered in our piece, why not head over to the website of a relevant awards body (such as the Women in Wine Awards) and educate yourself on some previous winners.
Arm yourself with a glass of wine and a great piece of women’s literature
Even if the day does fall on a Friday this year, there’s no need to feel like you’ve suddenly become everything you thought desperately uncool in your younger days if you end up spending the evening in the company of a good book.
Women’s literature is a vibrant and essential element in the fight for women’s rights. With a wealth of successful and inspirational female authors, you’re not short of options if you want to celebrate and support those individuals helping to elevate the place of women in the world.
I’m reading Naked Wine, by natural wine writer and journalist Alice Feiring. In Naked Wine, she details her adventures into natural winemaking, a fabulous and educational read!
Do something for a woman you love
Doing something great for a woman you love this International Women’s Day is easy. Whether it’s a wife, sister, mum, grandma, aunt, friend or all of the above, take then time to make their day better. The day itself is all about moving towards a world with a better gender-balance, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make a difference by showing someone close to you your appreciation.
We’ve put together our very own Women In Wine pack which contains hand-selected wines from the very same award-winning winemakers we spoke to in our recent blog. Treat that treasured woman in your life to a great case of sustainable wine AND support women who are working tirelessly to make a difference.
Live the hashtag
Better the balance, better the world #BalanceforBetter is the theme and hashtag for this year’s International Woman’s Day – a mantra you can take into your experience of wine by supporting wine grown and made by women.
