The Holiday Pack – Your festive wine guide

The Holiday Pack

Whether you’re kicking back and enjoying some much-needed downtime or you’re the one holding the fort at work, The Holiday Pack will have any festive occasion covered. We’ve chosen wines that are easy to drink, big on natural flavours and are, of course, from healthy, organically-grown, sustainable vineyards.

You’re always eating something during the holidays, and if you’re like us that means you’re always a wine in hand too. A well-matched wine and food, enhances the flavour and enjoyment of both. Pairing wines is easy(ish), if you remember these simple tips:

  • match the intensity of the food with the intensity of the wine – neither wine nor food should overpower the other
  • the wine should be more acidic than the food, the wine should be sweeter than the food – a young Riesling with fish and chips, a late harvest Riesling with Christmas pav
  • a high acidic wine cuts through fat – think sparkling wine with sweetened bacon for brunch
  • like for like flavours – ravioli with a fuller-style chardonnay, a McLaren Vale shiraz with a pepper crusted fillet of beef
  • high tannin wines are counterbalanced by fats and oils – full-bodied red wines with a cheeseboard

Festive lunch or dinner

Over the holiday season you’re bound to have some festive meals. And a good meal deserves a matching holiday wine.

Whether it’s pan-fried fish and chips, a tangy spicy poached Thai chicken salad, fire-grilled meats or a Persian pumpkin and pistachio roast. The following are our top picks for a festive meal:

Smallfry Riesling
The Wine Farm Pinot Gris
Dune Shiraz
Between Five Bells Pinot Noir

Happy hour

Whether your happy hour is at two, four or six in the afternoon. Whether you’re on your deck, at the beach or in the park, you’ll be wanting to reach for something light and refreshing – rosé and sparkling are perfect, but for something different try a skin-contact white. In our Holiday Wine Pack we have three which fit the bill:

Blind Corner Orange
Tamburlaine Rosé
See Saw Prosecco

BBQs

BBQs are part of the Australian summer – as ubiquitous as cricket, flies and thongs. They are usually long affairs, drifting through the afternoon to the soundtrack of ABC Grandstand or your favourite tunes. A BBQ needs holiday wines to match the variety of foods: a few lighter styles for pre-food sipping and a dry and rounded red for the meal. Any in the Holiday Wine Pack will do the trick, but if you just want to open a few we recommend the following:

Yangarra Blanc
Blind Corner Orange
Smallfry Joven
Woodpark Classic Dry Red

Brunch

It’s the holiday season, maybe it’s Boxing Day. You’ve nothing to do for the day – time for brunch. Before midday you tend to need something fresh and revitalising and generally white. Try these, they’re perfect for a summer brunch:

See Saw Prosecco
Tamburlaine Verdelho
Yangarra Blanc

Late balmy evenings

Nothing better than sitting up late coz you have no work tomorrow. It’s summer and the air is still and tinged with the warmth of the day. A light style red is what we’d be grabbing, each of the following are great slightly chilled:

Natural State Pinot Noir
Smallfry Joven

Unexpected guests

The unexpected guest. They pop in as they’ve nothing to do and are in the neighbourhood. You welcome them as it’s the holiday season, and you’ve also nothing to – nothing that can’t be put off for a while at any rate. White or red? Pull out either of the following, they’re crowd pleasers, don’t need food, but match nicely with a hurried cheese and charcuterie board or Christmas cake:

Tamburlaine Verdelho
See Saw Prosecco
Woodpark Classic Dry Red

Neighbour gatherings

In our street we have a holiday season street party. The neighbours bring out chairs, Eskys, music, snacks, beer and wine. We sit in the street and only move when the odd car comes by – usually joining us. The wine starts with rosé or white and as the evening darkens, out come the reds. These three are a great choice and perfect for sharing:

Yangarra Blanc
Woodpark Classic Dry Red
Tamburlaine Rosé

Last minute gift

If, like us, you regularly need a last-minute gift (perhaps for that uninvited guest), wine is an easy and safe choice. White or red, the following two are delicious summer wines which your friend will be sure to enjoy. Just make sure you’ve plenty of gift bottle bags:

Yangarra Blanc
Smallfry Joven
