2019 saw the release of the Wine Revolution’s inaugural Wine and Music playlist. In 2020 we have focused on wine in the lyrics, either as story or metaphor. We’ve analysed twelve songs which mention wine and paired them with some of our sustainably produced popular sellers which reflect the lyrics. A bit of fun for the long weekend. Grab a glass and crank up the volume. Find the list on Spotify or Apple Music
Killer Queen by Queen
“She keeps Moet et Chandon, In her pretty cabinet
‘Let them eat cake’ she says, Just like Marie Antoinette”
Like Freddie Mercury, Champagne is theatre. Forget the Moet though and enjoy a champagne from a producer with a strong environmental policy. Try Apollonis Authentic Meunier champagne. Made from 100% pinot meunier, Max Allen describes this wine as “rare treat” and very fitting for Queen!
Summer Wine by the Corrs with Bono
“Strawberries cherries and an angel’s kiss in spring
My summer wine is really made from all these things
Take off your silver spurs and help me pass the time
And I will give to you summer wine, Oh-oh summer wine”
Originally spybeat 60s and country, a beautiful version with the melodic voice of Andrea Corr and also featuring Bono. Last year we included the Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood original version. Listen with a lighter-style red such as Smallfry Joven, perfect for summer, full of red berry flavours. Served chilled and crank up the volume.
When I’m 64 by Beatles
“When I get older losing my hair, Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a valentine, Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?”
It’s a sad irony that only Paul and Ringo made it to 64. Listen with a fuller red such as Tamburlaine Malbec, its crowd pleaser just like the Beatles.
Jack Straw by Grateful Dead
“We can share the women, we can share the wine.
We can share what we got of yours cause we done shared all of mine.”
Chilled 60s psychedelic rock. Drink late at night with a funky and cool labelled red such as Freehand Merlot a perfect 60s match in every way!
Ironic by Alanis Morrisette
“It’s a black fly in your Chardonnay”
We are big fans of chardonnay but enjoy without the flies! Try our go-to favourite See Saw Chardonnay, a classic easy-drinking style.
Never Tear Us Apart by INXS
“If I hurt you, I’d make wine from your tears”
Two Australian songs make this year’s playlist. Making wine from tears would probably yield an aromatic white. Try Meadowbank Riesling, award-winning from Tassie, gentle and racy at the same time.
Elderberry Wine by Elton John
“Drunk all the time, Feeling fine on elderberry wine
Those were the days, We’d lay in the haze
Forget depressive times, How can I ever get it together
Without a wife in line, To pick the crop and get me hot, On elderberry wine.”
Time to lighten the mood and closest to an elderberry wine would be an orange wine. Try Dormilona Skinny Sav Blanc and bop away.
Alligator Wine by Jeff Buckley
“Take the blood out of an alligator
Take the left eye of a fish, yeah
Take the skin off of a frog, yeah
And mix it up in a dish
Add a cup of grease swamp water
And then countin’ one to nine
Spit over your left shoulder
And you got alligator wine”
Last year we included Jeff with his version of Lilac Wine. This year we feature his gurgling blues take of Jay Hawkins’ Alligator Wine. Rock on with Muddy Water Skin Ferment both wine and song, not for the faint-hearted.
Scene from an Italian Restaurant by Billy Joel
“A bottle of red, a bottle of white
Whatever kind of mood you’re in tonight
I’ll meet you anytime you want
In our Italian Restaurant”
One of Billy’s best. Listen loud and drink for “whatever kind of mood you’re in tonight”. If you can’t make up your mind, drink a bottle of Fairbank Sangiovese, goes with everything Italian, absolutely delicious! Saluté
The Wine Song by The Cat Empire
“If I ever found a pot of gold
I’d buy bottles untold of the nectar of the vines
I’m going to die with a twinkle in my eye
’cause I sung songs spun stories loved laughed and drank wine”
A crazy-fun, gypsy-esque song. Try not to dance! If you’re dancing and having some gypsy-fun pull out a bottle of Bright Young Thing Pet Nat Rose. Pure fun!
Sangria Wine by Jerry Jeff Walker
“Friends come for Saturday night
Man it’s nice to make up some sangria wine
It’s organic and it comes from the vine”
Can’t say bluesy country is my favourite music genre, but when we have friends over, we always serve organic wine. Try with a Spanish varietal such as Paxton’s Tempranillo certified organic and easy drinking like Sangria.
Going to California by Led Zeppelin
“Spent my days with a woman unkind,
Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine.
Made up my mind to make a new start,
Going to California with an aching in my heart.”
The seminal 70s rockers, Zeppelin’s Going to California evokes the heady days of misspent youth. We’ve all been there. Try it with a full-flavoured spicy Yangarra PF Shiraz.
