2012 Smallfry Late Harvest Riesling
|Region||Eden Valley, SA|
|Status||Certified Organic/Biodynamic with Australian Certified Organic (ACO)|
Smallfry Wines is a partnership in business and life between Suzi Hilder and Wayne Ahrens. Both were born into the industry and have various trade and technical qualifications. That they are also foodies drives their winemaking down a certain path. Natural ferments, nil to minimal adjustment, old oak a soft hand in the cellar allows the vineyard to speak. The style is Euro, with an eye to balance and subtlety.
The essential component is great fruit; they are lucky enough to own two very special vineyards, one in Eden Valley and the other in Vine Vale in the valley floor. The Eden Valley vineyard was established in 1994, while the Vine Vale block has been the Schlieb’s family seat for generations, with the last incumbent putting in 52 vintages before hanging up his snips.
‘The biggest point of difference is here at Smallfry we rely on wild yeast to conduct the primary alcoholic ferment. Why wild yeast? My belief is that the different flavour pro le obtained using wild yeast ferments is primarily due to population dynamics. The ferments can take a day or so to get going, during this time preferment maceration of skins occurs extracting a more fruit flavour profile’
|Wine||Intended as the dessert wine you can enjoy after dinner and not regret it the next day. Grapes are allowed to desiccate on the vine before harvest and natural fermentation. As there is no botrytis infection and consequently no lacase the SO2 requirement is in line with table wine levels, alcohol at 9% also makes for a lighter style of dessert wine. Nose of lime and lemon sherbet, developing honeyed toast notes with age. Lime and lemon juice notes, some nice talcy, minerally characters with a lingering acid finish. (Vegan-friendly).|
|Tasting Note||Citrus - Minerally - Balanced|
