2017 Cullen Mangan Vineyard Red Moon
|Producer||Cullen Wines, Margaret River, WA|
|Status||Certified Biodynamic with Biological Farmers Association (BFA) of Australia|
On the advice of eminent agronomist Dr. John Gladstones, Dr. Kevin and Diana Cullen planted a trial acre of vines at Wilyabrup, Margaret River in 1966. Commencing in 1971, 18 acres of vines were planted on their sheep and cattle farm, including their first Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc were planted between 1976 and 1978. In 1998 the change to total organic viticulture was made. Diana and daughter Vanya went intuitively towards healing the soil by putting back what had been taken out. Organics is about soil health – drains were put in, cover crops, and composting resulted in A Grade Organic Certification in 2003 being gained by the Biological Farmers Association (BFA) of Australia.
In 2003, whilst attending a Biodynamic Conference, Vanya Cullen decided that Biodynamics would add further to the holistic and natural approach to both vineyard and winemaking. In 2004 the Cullen Vineyard became certified A Grade Biodynamic and the Mangan Vineyard and Winery followed in 2008.
In 2005, the iconic Diana Madeline Cabernet Merlot was elevated to the top of Langton’s classification category of ‘Exceptional’. All Cullen Wines are grown on a certified Biodynamic, Carbon Neutral and naturally powered estate. Winemaker Vanya Cullen is one of the region’s trailblazers leading the way in biodynamics with Cullen Wines becoming Australia’s first certified carbon neutral winery.
|Wine||A blend of 57% Malbec, 37% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot, the fruit is handpicked and naturally fermented. The blend then spends 9 months in French oak with 10% of the barrels being new. A medium style, a touch on the lighter side with dark red and blue fruits, savoury and beautifully balanced.|
|Tasting Note||Blue Fruits - Crunchy - Vibrant|
