2018 Moonlit Forest ‘SC’ Pinot Gris
|Producer||Jayden Ong Wines|
|Region||Yarra Valley, Vic|
|Status||Organic and Biodynamic practices|
Jayden & Morgan Ong first established One Block in 2010, making a little more than 100 cases of his first love chardonnay. One Block has now grown to around 650 cases and Jayden has also established the La Maison de Ong, Moonlit Forest and Jayden Ong ranges encompassing a total 1400 cases a year. Jayden also now manages 3.5ha of vineyards for the labels.
In 2015 a small vineyard ‘Forest Garden’ and home on Mt Toolebewong was purchased. The vineyard, Yarra Valley’s highest altitude vineyard is 640-663m above sea level in the heart of the Yarra Valley GI, is farmed using organic and biological methods with close-planting. Jayden and Morgan also lease the Chestnut Hill vineyard & winery on Mount Burnett.
The majority of work is done in the vineyard – primarily excellent vineyard sites, low cropping, proactive canopy management, hand picked and sorted fruit, organic and biological farming, no herbicides, use of compost and cover crops – the approach in the winery is more hands off utilising ambient yeast ferments, quality oak and stainless steel, minimal handling, judicious SO2 use, reds are neither fined nor filtered and the whites the same, unless filtration is necessary. The goal is to offer a bottle of wine that encapsulates a specific time and place.
|Wine||The hard work is done in the vineyard with gentle hands-off winemaking techniques in the cellar. The SC Pinot Gris drinks like a rosé or light red - pleasantly spicy, red berries, orange, dry and well-rounded. Enjoy by itself or paired to a blue cheese.|
