About

Somos means “we are” in Spanish. Wines made by Ben Caldwell and Mauricio Ruiz Cantú, these are the wines they love to drink, and in essence what they are about. They make lofi, hands off wines from alternative varieties that are climate appropriate and suited to either McLaren Vale or the Adelaide hills, such as Aglianico which grows very well in the hot maritime climate of McLaren Vale. In the winery only wild fermentation occurs and no additives with the exception of sulphur.  Wholebunch and early pressing techniques are used on the reds to capture carbonic freshness and softness. Whites and rose get lots of skin contact and lees stirring to create texture in the wines. A second label called Juguette is exported to Mexico.

WineAglianico is the prestigious black variety of southern Italy producing deep colour, high acidity & tannin and black fruit flavours.

The 2018 Biodynamic Aglianico is a particular favourite of Ben's. The fruit is sourced from a certified vineyard in McLaren Vale managed by Paxton, the pioneers of Biodynamics in McLaren Vale. It is an extremely late ripener, sometimes being harvested in May, for perspective Cab Franc is picked in February, and it is also a very tannic and acidic variety so you need to balance acid levels and ripeness and even being able to ripen depending on weather at that late stage of the vintage. Their main goal in the winery is to try and avoid the extreme grip and produce a softer prettier spice driven wine.

Winemaking is 50% wholebunch, with cold soaking to allow a little carbonic maceration to take place, then about halfway through they foot tread the wine and then press about 3 Baume when the wine is still sweet to avoid late fermentation tannin extraction. It then finishes fermenting in barrel, giving a little barrel reduction for smoky flinty complexity. Lees stirring for a few month until bottling in december/January builds a little texture into the palate.
