A labour of love, Charlotte Hardy makes wines because that is her passion she simply says ”I love wine.”
Having made wine all over the world for 15 years, she has been drinking wine all over the world for longer. Whether walking through the vineyards., or immersed in the journey of turning grapes into wine, she loves to watch the personalities develop in every single barrel and to observe the effect of the years passing on bottles of wine. Charlotte thinks wine can be felt, and get so much joy making the Charlotte Dalton wines that surely, you will feel joy when you drink them. Simply put, the Charlotte Dalton Wines are made to bring her joy, happiness and contentedness and to share and hopefully pass those feelings on through the wines.
Charlotte Dalton’s 2019 Wahine Pinot Noir replaces the label’s award-winning Eliza, which was Charlotte’s graceful and free-spirited Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir. Despite using fruit from the Lenswood vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, Wahine reflects the winery’s new coastal home as well as Charlotte’s New Zealand roots. The word Wahine is Maori for woman or a woman of strength.
In Hawaii, Wahine can also mean a female surfer. For Charlotte, her new 2019 wine features a depth not seen in previous Charlotte Dalton Pinot Noirs. “I was always nervous to delve too deep and lose the Pinot Noir aspect of this wine, however, to me this wine is so pure and so Pinot,” she says.
|Wine||Wahine - Maori for feminine, woman. A woman of strength. From a vineyard in Lenswood, the 2019 is the 2nd vintage Charlotte has sourced this fruit, and while yields were down significantly, the fruit quality was exceptional. Whole bunches slowly added to the fermenter over a 10-day period, with a slow ferment working its way from the bottom to the top over a 2-week period. Fruit is stepped on, then pressed into french oak (40% new) for 8 months. bottled with no additions bar minimal sulphites.|
Raspberry, cherry and floral on top of underlaying savoury character. Tannin is ample but very fine and mouth coating. Very limited.
|Tasting Note||Raspberry - Cherry - Savoury|
